He held the 100 m World record between June 2005 and May 2008 (9.77, 9.74). He was awarded the title of Male World Athlete of the Year in 2006. In 2000 Powell ran 11.45 and 23.07 in the 100m and 200m respectively at the ISSA High School Championships and neither of them was enough to advance him to the next round.

The following year he won the Jamaican junior title in 10.50 seconds.

He won his first Jamaican senior title in 2003.

Asafa is a deeply religious man who has been raised strictly in his Christian family. In his high school yearbook, a jovial Asafa declared that his ambition was to become a "famous athlete" and his destiny was to "Bruck World Record". He has had a passion for cars, especially race cars, ever since he was teenager when he built his own go-kart, which he raced around his community. He has a talent for playing both the drum and guitar, and he still plays the guitar in his spare time. He likes stew chicken and fried dumplings; he loves reggae and hip hop music. Asafa enjoys watching football and he sometimes plays it.
