Place of residence: Split, Croatia Coach: Joško Vlašic, Bojan Marinovic She is the oldest child in a sport family. Her mother, Venera, was a cross-country skier, a basketball player and an athlete, while her father, Joško, was a Decathlon champion. She has three brothers, Marin (b.1983), Luka (b.1993) and Nikola (1997). She was named after the Moroccan city Casablanca where her father won gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in 1983. Arguably the best female high jumper of recent years Vlašic is one of the most compelling and glamorous athletes on the athletics circuit.Fans are happy to watch her huge high-jumping efforts as well as her famous dancing celebrations. Sport has always been a natural part of her life. As she has never been really interested in team sports she started training in athletics when she was 7 years old. With very careful coaching she was not pushed into ‘pre-matured’ performances, yet she was not even 17 when she won the World Junior Championships in 2000 in Santiago de Chile and competed at the Sydney Olympic Games.Since 2001 she has been part of the international senior elite and her second world junior title in Kingston in 2002 was already a ‘no question’.Before the Athens Olympic Games in 2004 she was regularly feeling lethargic and was unable to maintain a consistent weight. Even her whole sports career was in question. She was diagnosed with a hyperthyroid condition. After having tried the conservative methods of treatment she finally underwent surgery in 2005 and the following year her shining career continued. By the end of the 2009 season she has cleared 2 metres or more as many as 131 times in 82 competitions. She jumped 2.05m or higher 14 times. In both statistics she is 2nd after Stefka Kostadinova.
