She has a degree in management information systems Richards left Jamaica for the USA at the age of 12 and became a US citizen in May 2002. Sanya Richards has been world’s top female 400m runner since 2005, and finally managed to get an individual outdoor world title in 2009 in Berlin. She started running at 7 years old. "You are a faster than a speeding bullet," her mother said just before leaving Jamaica, and gave Sanya a necklace with a bullet pendant that she still wears as a good-luck charm.

At St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Ft. Lauderdale (Florida) she became a top athlete.

She broke the US High School 400m record in 2002 (50.69). Since 2005 she has been one of the most welcomed stars of the international athletic circuit.

She won the Golden League Jackpot 3 times. She was diagnosed with Behcets syndrome (a form of vasculitis), an immune-system disease that causes skin lesions. She is an assistant coach at Baylor University. She also plays an integral role in USA Track and Field’s “Be a Champion” program. She likes to sing and dance. She often puts on shows for family and friends. Her fiancé is (American) football star Aaron Ross, a Super Bowl champion. Her pre-game marriage proposal in 2007 from Aaron Ross was televised nationally during halftime by NBC at a New York Giants game. "I've always wanted to be...the face of track and field. I take it as a huge responsibility...to be a great ambassador for the sport."
