Her father is from Chuvek, Dagestan and belongs to an ethnic group of Tabasarans. He is a plumber.

Her mother was a shop assistant in Russia, now a housewife.

She has a younger sister, Inna. She has both a Bachelors and Masters Degree after graduating from the Volgograd State Academy of Physical Culture. Isinbayeva is the best female pole-vaulter of all time, having set 27 world records – 15 outdoor and 12 indoor and having dominated the event in recent years. Initially, she trained as an artistic gymnast in her hometown of Volgograd but she became too tall and switched to Pole vault. She made an immediate impact, winning her first major title at the World Youth Games in Moscow in 1998 that she defended the following year in Bydgoszcz.

She won gold at the World Junior Championships in 2000 and at the European Junior Championships in 2001.

She gained her first senior championship medal by finishing second at the European Championships in 2002 and in 2003 she set her first World Record in Gateshead (4.82m). She was named Female Athlete of the Year in 2004, 2005 and 2008. In 2009 she lost her World title (to Anna Rogowska of Poland) after failing to achieve a successful vault, but she broke her own world record at Weltklasse Zürich meeting by clearing 5.06 m. Her pole-vaulting technique is considered as good as the mens. It caused some sensation when she left her former sponsor adidas for signing with Chinese company Li Ning. She is formally an officer in the Russian army, and in 2005 she was given military rank of senior lieutenant, then in 2008 she was promoted to the military rank of Captain.
