IAAF Diamond League expands into a fourth continent: Africa
The Meeting International Mohammed VI which is annually held in the Moroccan capital’s Complexe Prince Moulay Abdellah replaces New York, USA with immediate effect for the 2016 season.
Launched in March 2009 the IAAF Diamond League, which features the world´s best athletes competing across 32 individual track & field disciplines, has for its first six competition seasons (2010 – 2015) included host cities in Asia, Europe, and North America. With the addition of Rabat, the series of 14 meetings which annual takes place from May to September now includes a fourth continent, Africa.
Rabat first applied for membership of the IAAF Diamond League in 2014 and has since undergone a rigorous evaluation process to confirm its organisation, facilities and services were of a high enough standard for inclusion into Athletics’ top-tier international invitational circuit.

» NEW: Diamond Race Points (MORE)
The IAAF Diamond League has introduced a new points format for the 2016 season.
From 2016, the points system will be changed to state that athletes finishing in the top six will all win points. The new breakdown is as follows:
- 1st place: 10 DR points
- 2nd place: 6 DR points
- 3rd place: 4 DR points
- 4th place: 3 DR points
- 5th place: 2 DR points
- 6th place: 1 DR point
At the finals, all points will be doubled as usual
In all six previous seasons of the series, athletes could win Diamond Race points at any given meeting by finishing in the top three in their Diamond Race discipline. In the IAAF Diamond League Finals in Zürich and Brussels, points are doubled. The athlete with the most Diamond Race points at the end of the season wins the Diamond Trophy. If two or more athletes are tied on points at the end of the season, the athlete with the most victories wins the Diamond Trophy.
With more points up for grabs this season, more athletes will find themselves in the running for Diamond Race glory. 2016 promises to provide some of the most competitive and thrilling Diamond Races yet.
» NEW: Number of Attempts in Technical Disciplines (MORE)
Starting in 2016 the number of attempts for all throws and horizontal jumps is changed for all IAAF Diamond League meetings
In the disciplines listed below, all athletes (max 8 plus two national) will have 3 attempts, with the Top 4 then getting 3 more attempts:
- Shot Put
- Discus Throw
- Javelin Throw
- Long Jump
- Triple Jump
