Best of Training Diaries - 2019

Throughout the 2020 Wanda Diamond League season, Training Diaries will be giving you regular insights into how the world's best athletes prepare for a Diamond League meeting. In 2019, we caught up with some of the best rising stars in the sport, including Sydney McLaughlin and Grant Holloway.

Our year of Training Diaries began with the season opener in Doha, where we met up with middle distance star Emmanuel Korir. Diamond League Champion in 2018, the Kenyan launched his title defence with a narrow defeat to Botswana's Nijel Amos in Qatar.

Next up was then 200m world champions Ramil Guliyev, who showed us through his training routine in rainy Stockholm ahead of the third meeting of the season. Having taken an early season win in Doha, Guliyev was beaten to the line by Aaron Brown in Sweden.

In Oslo, we caught up with one of the stars of the season in US hurdling heroine Sydney McLaughlin. At just 20 years of age, McLaughlin would go on to be crowned Diamond League champion in her first season as a professional.

Sticking with the hurdles, it was Omar McLeod who strutted his pre-meeting stuff for us in Rabat. McLeod looked on course for victory in the Moroccan capital but took a tumble a few strides from the line, tripping up his pal and eventual victor Sergey Shubenkov in the process.

On Californian soil a few weeks later, we linked up with sprinting royalty. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce let us in on her training secrets in Stanford. Though she didn't pick up all eight points at the Prefontaine Classic, the Jamaican sensation would storm to successive victories in the following two meetings.

It was another returning sprint star who graced our Training Diaries cameras in Lausanne. Fresh from his comeback victory in Rabat three weeks earlier, Canada's Andre De Grasse gave us a sneak peak at his preparations for Athletissima.

Steven Gardiner snatched two victories early on in 2018, but had to make do with just the one on the Road to the Final last season. A coincidence that his win in Monaco came just days after he featured in Training Diaries? We think not.

In July, we hopped on a big red bus and headed down to meet an Ivorian superstar at her pre-meet shakedown. Fresh from a barnstorming 2018 and a 100m victory in Stanford, Marie-Josée Ta Lou gave us her entry into the Training Diaries in London.

It was a bumper issue of Training Diaries at the Meeting de Paris, as we linked up with both reigning Diamond League high jump champion Brandon Starc and rising hurdles star and NCAA record holder Grant Holloway.

In our final episode of the year, Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan showed us her final preparations for the Diamond League Final. Sadly, Amusan's season finale would end in disappointment as she was disqualified for a false start.

Here's to another glorious year of Training Diaries at the 2020 Wanda Diamond League!
