Kipyegon to continue title defence in Eugene
Kenyan distance legend Faith Kipyegon will compete in the women's 1500m at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Eugene on July 5
Five-time Wanda Diamond League champion Faith Kipyegon will return to the site of her 2023 title win when she lines up in the women’s 1500m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on July 5.
Kenyan star Kipyegon is aiming for a record-equalling sixth Diamond League title in 2025, having established herself in recent years as one of the greatest track and field athletes in history.
A four-time world champion and three-time Olympic gold medallist, Kipyegon has notched up 27 Diamond League victories in her career, winning her first 1500m Diamond Trophy in 2017 and regaining it four times between 2021 and 2024.
She has also broken a world record four times at a Diamond League meeting.
In 2023, she broke the 1500m, 5000m and mile world records in Florence, Paris and Monaco respectively. Last season, she broke her own 1500m world record again in Paris with 3:49.04.
She has fond memories of Eugene, having won six times at Hayward Field over the years, including at the Wanda Diamond League Final in 2023.
She will return in fine form this year, having started her Diamond League campaign with a bang in Xiamen.
Kipyegon only narrowly missed out on a 1000m world record at the season opener in China, clocking 2:29.21.
The Wanda Diamond League is the elite one-day meeting series in global athletics. It comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final, which will be held in Zurich on 27 and 28 August 2025.
