Ahead of the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday, there was plenty of talk about whether Eugene would finally see an American winner in the famous men’s Bowerman Mile.
In the end, though, it was in the women’s mile that delivered the goods for the home crowd on July 4.
Nikki Hiltz was already in fine form when they arrived at their home Diamond League meeting at Hayward Field.
The 31-year-old had won bronze over 1500m at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Poland in March and followed up with a third-place finish at the Diamond League in Rome last month.
In Eugene, they faced their toughest test yet against Kenyan legend Faith Kipyegon, who was making her first middle-distance appearance of the season.
Kipyegon led the pack at the bell, but Hiltz timed their kick to perfection in the final half-lap.
Easing past the Kenyan on the final straight, the American raced home to what was only their second Diamond League win.
The Wanda Diamond League’s Official Timekeeper OMEGA clocked them at 4:17.49, a new world lead.
It was a first Diamond League defeat in four years for Kipyegon and a major career milestone for Hiltz.
“I just want to relive that over and over. That was just so fun!” they said.
