The Fastest Diamond League 100m Ever

Usain Bolt may have hogged the headlines in 2012, but it was his compatriot Yohan Blake who ran the fastest ever 100m in Diamond League history when he soared down the track to an astonishing victory in Lausanne.

Bolt and Blake had dominated the sprints at the London Olympic Games earlier in the season. While Bolt was writing himself into legend with a clean sweep of gold medals, Blake was shining quietly in the great man’s shadow, taking silver behind his compatriot in both the 100m and the 200m.

In Lausanne, it appeared that Bolt would once again hog the limelight as the headline attraction in the 200m. Yet Blake was having none of it, deciding instead to write the headlines himself in the 100m.

Surging away from Tyson Gay in second place, Blake crossed the line in 9.69, a breathtaking Diamond League record which still stands today.

Bolt would later win the 200m in some style, yet he was happy to cede the attention to his fellow Jamaican, congratulating Blake from the sidelines.
