Kerr sets sights on mile world record in London

World indoor champion Josh Kerr will attack the men's mile world record at the London leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League in July.

Great Britain’s Josh Kerr will attempt to break the men’s mile world record in front of his home crowd at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in London on July 18.

Kerr was already confirmed to race in the mile at the Novuna London Athletics Meet this summer, and he has now announced his plan to attack Hicham El Guerrouj’s 27-year-old world record of 3:43.13.

“I am really excited. There are no guarantees in this; it is a record that deserves a lot of respect. I believe I am respecting it by coming out and talking about it. I want to do it with the people I have behind me, I have an amazing team,” said Kerr.

The 29-year-old Scot is one of the best distance runners of his generation.

Crowned world indoor champion over 3000m earlier this month, he is also a two-time Olympic medallist and one-time world champion over 1500m.

Kerr’s only Diamond League win to date also came in the mile in Eugene in 2024, when he set a British record of 3:45.34.

London is the 11th leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League, which begins in Doha on May 8 and ends at the two-day series final in Brussels on September 4-5.

The series unites the biggest names in track and field in some of the world’s most iconic arenas, crossing four continents and 15 cities over the course of the season.
