Just weeks after becoming the youngest world champion in track and field history, US middle-distance prodigy Cooper Lutkenhaus will make his debut on the Wanda Diamond League stage at the BAUHAUS-Galan in Stockholm on June 7.
Seventeen-year-old Lutkenhaus stunned the athletics world when he clocked 1:44.24 to win 800m gold at the World Athletics Indoor Championshipsin Kujawy Pomorze earlier this month.
The historic world title was the latest in a string of extraordinary victories which have established the Texan teenage sensation as one of the sport’s most exciting young talents
Last season, Lutkenhaus ran a world U18 record of 1:42.27 to finish second at the US Championships, before making his World Championships debut in Tokyo in September.
In June, he will reach another career milestone on the global stage when he lines up in the men’s 800m at the Stockholm leg of the Wanda Diamond League, athletics’ premier one-day meeting series.
“I’ve watched several races from BAUHAUS-galan online in recent years. The names that have competed there have basically been among the greatest of all time. They truly love athletics in Sweden, and I’m looking forward to experiencing it. It’s a dream come true for me,” said Lutkenhaus.
“I’m going to give everything I have at Stockholm Stadium. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” says Lutkenhaus.
Stockholm is the sixth leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League, which begins in Doha on May 8 and ends at the two-day series final in Brussels on September 4-5.
The series unites the biggest names in track and field in some of the world’s most iconic arenas, crossing four continents and 15 cities over the course of the season.
