Alfred and Jefferson-Wooden meet in Rome 200m

The reigning Olympic and world 100m champions will clash in the women's 200m at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea Wanda Diamond League meeting in Rome on June 4.

Global 100m champions Julien Alfred and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden will meet in the 200m for the very first time at the Rome leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League on June 4.

Olympic champion Alfred and world champion Jefferson-Wooden have dominated the 100m in recent years, but have never met over the longer distance.

That will all change at this year’s Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, where they headline a world-class line-up which also includes Great Britain star Amy Hunt.

Alfred is the reigning Diamond League champion in the 100m, having won the title in both 2024 and 2025.

Yet the St. Lucia star’s claim to supremacy was challenged last year as Jefferson-Wooden staked her claim to be the world’s number one sprinter.

The American claimed her first ever Diamond League win when she beat Alfred at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, before going on to take further victories in Silesia and Brussels.

Though Alfred ultimately took the series title, Jefferson-Wooden ended the season as world champion and world number one.

Their rivalry is set to resume in 2026, with Rome the first of two confirmed meetings in the upcoming Diamond League season.

Alfred and Jefferson-Wooden will also go head to head in the women’s 100m at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Silesia on August 23.

Rome is the fifth leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League, which begins in Doha on May 8 and ends at the two-day series final in Brussels on September 4-5.

The series unites the biggest names in track and field in some of the world’s most iconic arenas, crossing four continents and 15 cities over the course of the season.
