WDL Classics Eugene 2010: Oliver goes under 13 seconds

Live from the archive every single Sunday on the Wanda Diamond League YouTube channel, the WDL Classics series revisits historical Diamond League meetings with a re-live stream of the full two-hour TV broadcast. This week: David Oliver makes a splash at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

The Prefontaine Classic in Eugene has been a mainstay of the Diamond League circuit ever since the beginning, and the records were already tumbling when the series first touched down at Hayward Field back in 2010.

It was 110m hurdles star David Oliver who dominated Eugene’s Diamond League debut, clocking 12.90 to break the 13-second barrier for only the second time in his career and tie the American record.

The time was just 0.03 seconds short of the then world record, which Oliver’s compatriot Aries Merritt would eventually break with his 12.80 at the Diamond League Final in Brussels two years later.

Oliver was one of several athletes to clock a world lead in Eugene, with fellow American Christian Cantwell throwing 22.41m in the shot put and Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown racing to 10.78 in the women’s 100m.

The home crowd had plenty of other victories to cheer, meanwhile, as Allyson Felix stormed to her second 400m win of the season and Lashinda Demus extended her winning streak to three in a row in the women’s 400m hurdles.

You can rewatch the 2010 Eugene meeting in full on the Wanda Diamond League YouTube channel from 15:00 GMT this Sunday.
