1. Everything to run for in the 100m (100m W)
Elaine Thompson, Michelle-Lee Ahye, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor and Olympic silver medallist Marie-Josée Ta Lou have already booked their place in the 100m Final, but with four spots at least still up for grabs, there is a whole host of stars who will need points in Birmingham if they are to join them. Dafne Schippers and Morolake Akinosun are among those leading the chasing pack, while local heroes such as Asha Philip, Dina Asher-Smith and Desiree Henry will be hoping to leapfrog their way into the top eight with a big points haul.
2. Tamberi eyes final spot (High Jump M)
“The main thing is to get enough points and get into the final” said Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi after a superb performance in Rabat last month. Currently perched in eighth place, Tamberi will be after another high finish in Birmingham to ensure that he fulfils that goal and has a chance at winning the Diamond Trophy in Zürich next week. Competition will be stiff in Birmingham, with the likes of home favourite Robbie Grabarz and newly crowned World Champion Mutaz Essa Barshim also on the entry list.
3. Baji and Darien in need of points (110m Hurdles M)
Aries Merritt, Orlando Ortega and Sergey Shubenkov are all set to run in Birmingham, and all of them have already booked their place in the Final. Of those looking to join them, Garfield Darien, Devon Allen and world bronze medallist Balász Baji are all currently outside the top eight, but will be able to secure a qualifying position with a good points haul in Birmingham. Andrew Pozzi, meanwhile, will be hoping to consolidate his qualifying position in front of home support on Sunday.
4. Felix meets Francis again in bid for Final (400m W)
Surprise 400m gold medallist in London Phyllis Francis will return to action in Birmingham, and will immediately face silver and bronze medallists Salwa Eid Naser and Allyson Felix. Superstar Felix is the only one of those who currently occupies a qualifying position, and will be looking to secure her place in the Final and reassert her superiority with a win over Francis.
5. Last chance saloon for Torneus and Henderson (Long Jump M)
The men’s long jump has been dominated by South Africans Luvo Manyonga and Rushwahl Samaai this season, and with those two stars both already qualified, there are still six places in the Final up for grabs in Birmingham. Emiliano Lasa and Godfrey Mokoena will be confident of securing their spots, but for the likes of Michael Hartfield and Jeff Henderson, a top four finish and a big points haul may be necessary if they are to have a shot at the Diamond Trophy.
