Diamond World Champions in 2019

Beatrice Chepkoech – 3000m Steeplechase Women

A world record breaker in 2018, Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech was the hot favourite for both titles at the beginning of the season, and she didn’t disappoint. Having cruised to the defence of her Diamond Trophy, Chepkoech atoned for her costly mistake at the World Championships in 2017 as she rampaged to the title with a new championship record. 

Timothy Cheruiyot – 1500 Men

Dominant in the Diamond League since 2017, Timothy Cheruiyot missed out on the world title that year as he was beaten to the line in London by fellow Kenyan Elijah Motonei Manangoi. There was no catching him in 2019, however, as Cheruiyot soared to the gold medal in Doha and a third consecutive Diamond League title. 

Christian Taylor – Triple Jump Men

Having already done the double in 2015 and 2017, Christian Taylor is now the only athlete who has won both the Diamond Trophy and World Championships gold in three different seasons. Weeks before defending his world crown in Doha last week, the American had secured a record-equalling seventh Diamond League title in Brussels. 

21-year-old rising star Salwa Eid Naser stunned the world as she became the third fastest woman in history over one lap with her jaw-dropping victory over Shaunae Miller-Uibo at the world championships. Yet however impressive, Naser’s brilliance will have come as no surprise to those who followed her utter domination of the Diamond League over the last two years. 

Noah Lyles – 200m Men

A fresh-faced Noah Lyles won his first career Diamond Trophy back in 2017, but missed out on the world title later that year. Two years later, he Lyles confirmed his status as a sprint superstar as he did the double for the first time. 

Karsten Warholm – 400m Hurdles Men

His wide-eyed wonder made Karsten Warholm a global star and a successful internet meme when he was crowned world champion in 2017, but he would have to wait another two years to get his hands on the Diamond Trophy. In 2019, the Norwegian hit new heights as he claimed both gongs. 

Sam Kendricks – Pole Vault Men

US star Kendricks has done the double once before in 2017, the year in which he finally ended Renaud Lavillenie’s seven-year dominance of the Diamond League. This year, Kendricks was in pole position again as he rampaged to two titles.

Daniel Stahl – Discus Men

Andrius Gudzius did the double back in 2017, but this year was the year of Daniel Stahl. The Swede bookended his season with brilliant performances in Doha, setting a Diamond League record at the season opener and claiming the world title in the same spot this month, just weeks after winning his first Diamond Trophy

Malaika Mihambo – Long Jump Women

Germany’s Mihambo cleared the seven-metre mark several times on the Road To The Final before doing so again in Brussels to snaffle a first career Diamond Trophy. Her formidable form continued in Doha as she sailed a full 7.30m to claim the gold medal. 

Donovan Brazier – 800m Men

The first non-African athlete ever to win the 800m Diamond Trophy, American Brazier followed up his Diamond League triumph in style by breaking a 32-year-old championship record to claim the gold medal in Doha.

Mariya Lasitskene – High Jump Women

The undisputed queen of the high jump for the last few years, Mariya Lasitskene completed a double double this year, having already won both titles in one season back in 2017. 

Lijiao Gong – Shot Put Women

Lijiao Gong also joined the select group of athletes who have done the double double this year. Having been crowned Diamond League Champion and World Champion in 2017, the Chinese star did it again this year, sauntering to third consecutive Diamond Trophy before defending her world crown in Doha. 

Yaime Perez – Discus Women

Cuba’s Yaime Perez has slowly chipped away at the hegemony of Sandra Perkovic over the last few years, unseating the Croatian from her Diamond League throne last season before defending the title in 2019. This year, Perez finally added the world title to her growing trophy cabinet as she relieved Perkovic of her crown in Doha. 

Sifan Hassan – 1500m Women

Having stormed to the mile world record in Monaco and a new 3000m European record in Stanford, Sifan Hassan was the star of the season on the Road To The Final this year and crowned her campaign with Diamond Trophies in both the 1500m and 5000m. She also claimed two gold medals in Doha, but it was the 1500m world title which ensured that she too can boast of a diamond double in 2019.
