Discus heavyweights line up in Oslo

Wanda Diamond League champion Matthew Denny will take on former world champion Kristjan Čeh and Olympic champion Daniel Ståhl in the men's discus at the Bislett Games in Oslo on May 30th.

Three of the world’s biggest discus stars will line up at the Bislett Stadium in Oslo on May 30th, as reigning Wanda Diamond League champion Matthew Denny takes on Olympic champion Daniel Ståhl and former world champion Kristjan Čeh.

Australian thrower Denny claimed a stunning victory in the Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene last year, stealing the title from under the noses of favourites Čeh and Ståhl with a national record of 68.43m.

Čeh was crowned Diamond League champion a year earlier, becoming the first Slovenian ever to win the series title. He is one of the few athletes to have won every Diamond League competition in a single season, and his five victories in 2022 were part of a total winning streak of eight Diamond League triumphs in a row, as the Slovenian dominated the discus in 2022 and early 2023.

Ståhl is a two-time Diamond Trophy holder, having won the series title in 2019 and defended it in 2021, when he too collected a clean sweep of four victories on the Diamond League circuit. The Swede also goes into 2024 as the reigning Olympic champion, having claimed the gold medal in Tokyo in 2021.

The three heavyweights will  be joined by a world-class field which includes Jamaican star Fedrick Daces, Lithuania’s 2017 world champion Andrius Gudzius, world number three Mykolas Alekna and Sweden’s Simon Petterson.

The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in athletics. It comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on 13th-14th September.
