Kipyegon eyes 1500m glory in Florence

Kenya's Faith Kipyegon will be out to exorcise a narrow 1500m defeat from 2021 when she returns to Florence for the third leg of the Wanda Diamond League at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala on June 2nd.

Wanda Diamond League 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon will return to the stadium where she broke the Kenyan record in 2021 when she headlines the women’s 1500m at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala in Florence on June 2nd.

Kipyegon, 29, has mixed memories of Florence, having narrowly lost to Sifan Hassan in a thrilling race there two years ago despite setting what was then a national record of 3:53.91. She has since reduced that record by more than three seconds, most recently at the Wanda Diamond League Monaco last year.

The Kenyan star remains the woman to beat in the 1500m, with the Diamond Trophy  just one of three major global titles she currently holds.

Kipyegon’s victory in Zurich last year saw her crowned Diamond League champion for the third time in her career and came just weeks after she had successively regained her World Championships gold medal in Eugene.

She is also the reigning Olympic champion over 1500m, having taken gold at both the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the Tokyo Games in 2021.
