Monaco: Five Things To Look Out For
The 2022 Wanda Diamond League continues this Wednesday at Monaco’s Herculis meeting, with a whole host of Olympic and world champions set to resume the race for a place in the series final on September 7-8th.
While some stars have already booked their ticket to Zurich, others still need to pick up points if they are to have a shot at winning the Diamond Trophy at the end of the season. So ahead of the tenth leg of this campaign, here are five things to look out for in Monaco.
Record for Rojas?
After picking up her third World Championships gold medal in Oregon last month, Venezuelan triple jump star Yulimar Rojas can turn her full attention to the defence of the Diamond Trophy she won for the first time last season.
Monaco will be Rojas’ first appearance on the circuit in 2022, meaning she has some catching up to do if she is to ensure qualification to the final in September. Having jumped 15.47m in Eugene, however, she will be firm favourite not only to win at Herculis, but also to take Caterine Ibargüen’s long-standing meeting record of 15.31m.
10.66 and all that
Short of injury or full-blown global armageddon, it is difficult to think of anything that could stop Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the moment. Fresh from her fifth world title in Oregon, the Jamaican superstar celebrated her national independence day with a stunning world lead of 10.66 on her return to Diamond League action in Silesia on Saturday.
There were no points on offer in that race, but there will be in the 100m on Wednesday, when Fraser-Pryce goes up against fellow world champion Shericka Jackson and Ivorian star Marie-Josée Ta Lou. Yet to win a Diamond Discipline 100m this season, the Jamaican is currently sixth in the standings, but can take a huge step towards the final if she continues her brilliant form at Herculis.
