The 8 Biggest Javelin Throws in Diamond League History
For several years, Kenya’s Julius Yego held the Diamond League record in the men’s javelin. His memorable 91.39 in Birmingham sent hundreds of jaws dropping to the floor at the time, and proved unbeatable for most of his peers until two seasons afterwards.
Then, though, came Thomas Röhler. In Doha in 2017, the German astonished the world with an incredible 93.90, smashing Yego’s record and nearly impaling a cameraman as he did so.
Röhler’s effort kickstarted a golden javelin era, particularly for the Germans, and he and his compatriots have gone on to dominate the discipline, both in the Diamond League and beyond, ever since. Johannes Vetter, who also features in our our top eight, even bettered Röhler’s Doha effort later in 2017.
If anyone had suspected that 2017 was a fluke, however, they were proved wrong at the very start of the next season. In Doha in 2018, Röhler, Vetter and eventual Diamond Trophy winner Andreas Hofmann all cleared 90m in an incredible competition, meaning that an incredible three of our top eight throws come from one single evening in the Gulf.
