Discus heavyweights Matthew Denny, Daniel Ståhl and Roje Stona and 1500m Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse are the latest big names to join a star-studded line-up at the penultimate Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season in Brussels on August 22.
The Allianz Memorial Van Damme is the last meeting before the Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich on August 27-28 and the last chance for the world’s best athletes to secure qualification and a shot at the series title.
Nuguse is currently 12th in the 1500m Diamond League standings after finishing second in his one appearance of the series so far in Eugene earlier this month. The American will be hoping to propel himself up the standings and into the final with a big performance in Brussels.
Should he secure his passage to Zurich, the American record holder will fancy his chances of victory at the Final, having won at Weltklasse in each of the past two seasons.
There will be plenty to fight for in the men’s discus too, with six final spots still up for grabs ahead of Brussels.
Sweden’s Ståhl and Slovenia’s Kristjan Čeh have already secured qualification, but double Diamond League champion Denny and Olympic gold medallists Stona are still in need of points.
Denny is sitting comfortably in third, while Stona may need a big performance in Brussels if he is to defend seventh place and book his ticket to Zurich.
Several big-name Belgian stars will also be in action at the King Baudouin Stadium, including sprinters Alexander Doom and Rani Rosius.
