Olympic medallists reunite in Eugene steeplechase

Paris 2024 medallists Winfred Yavi, Peruth Chemutai and Faith Cherotich will go head to head in the women's 3000m steeplechase at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Eugene on July 5.

All three Olympic medallists from Paris 2024 will go head to head in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Wanda Diamond League in Eugene next month.

Olympic champion Winfred Yavi will go up against silver medallist Peruth Chemutai and reigning Wanda Diamond League champion Faith Cherotich at the Prefontaine Classic, in one of six Olympic podium rematches now scheduled for the US leg of athletics’ premier one-day series.

Bahrain star Yavi is the reigning Olympic and world champion and the second-fastest female steeplechaser of all time.

Last season, she came within a whisker of breaking the world record when she clocked an Asian record of 8:44.39 at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Rome.

Uganda’s Chemutai came second behind her in that race and also took silver at the Olympic Games a few weeks later.

Yet it is Kenya’s Cherotich who goes into the race as reigning Diamond League champion, having beaten both Yavi and Chemutai with a stunning performance at last year’s series final in Brussels.
