Tamberi to launch title defence in Rome

Italian high jump star Gianmarco Tamberi will return to his home Wanda Diamond League meeting at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala in Rome this Friday.

Reigning Wanda Diamond League high jump champion Gianmarco Tamberi will launch his title defence on home soil at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala in Rome this Friday.

A national treasure in Italy since his 2021 Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, Tamberi will raise the roof at the Stadio Olimpico as he appears in front of an adoring home crowd for the third time in four years.

The fifth leg of the Wanda Diamond League will be the perfect start to the season for the Italian, as he looks to defend his world and Diamond League titles in 2025.

The Italian star has never won at the Italian Diamond League meeting, and will be hoping to break that curse when he makes his seventh Golden Gala appearance this week.

He goes up against a world-class field which includes reigning Olympic champion Hamish Kerr, the USA’S JuVaughn Harrison and 2023 Diamond League champion Woo Sanghyeok.
