Thompson vs Schippers – Diamond League Duels

Sprinting stars Elaine Thompson and Dafne Schippers are set to do battle again in Doha this May, we take a look back at some of their best duels in the IAAF Diamond League.

The Flying Dutchwoman and the Jamaican superstar have sprinted their way to the pinnacle of the sport in recent years, with Schippers picking up two IAAF World Championship gold medals, while Thompson became double Olympic Champion in 2016.

In the IAAF Diamond League too they have delighted crowds and dominated their fields, picking up three Diamond Trophies between them in the last two seasons.

The two stars have not shied away from taking each other on in direct competition either, having gone head to head at numerous Diamond League meetings in 2017 and 2016.

As we prepare to watch them do battle again in Doha this year, here is a look back at some of the best Diamond League duels between Elaine Thompson and Dafne Schippers.

Oslo 2016 – 200m

Schippers has enjoyed some incredible performances on the Diamond League circuit, but few were as good as her victory in the 200m at the 2016 Bislett Games. Soaring ahead of Thompson and the rest of the field, she notched up an IAAF Diamond League record and meeting record of 21.93. Thompson took second place, but she was no match for the Dutchwoman, who went on to win the 200m Diamond Trophy that season.

Zürich 2016 – 200m

Schippers may have taken the Diamond Trophy in 2016, but she lost her Diamond League record a few months later, after losing to Thompson in an incredible photo finish in Zurich.

With Schippers ahead on the home straight, Thompson upped the ante, drawing inches closer with every stride before just nodding home ahead of her rival. It wasn’t enough to steal the Trophy, but it did set a new record of 21.85.

Brussels 2016 – 100m

Just eight days later in Brussels, Thompson would get her hands on the Diamond Trophy as she secured the title in the 100m

There was no photo finish this time, as the Jamaican powered ahead of Schippers to take victory in 10.72 and pick up a fourth 100m victory that season.

Doha 2017 – 200m

Thompson would do it again at the beginning of the following season, kicking off her 2017 Diamond League campaign with a comprehensive victory over Schippers in the 200m.

Neither of them would win the Diamond Trophy in the 200m that year, howeve, as Shaunae Miller-Uibo chased down Thompson in the Final to claim a surprise victory.

London 2017 – 100m

Thompson did win the 100m Diamond Trophy in 2017, and one of her most impressive victories on the Road To The Final came in London.

Level with Schippers for the best part of the race, the Olympic Champion pulled out that little extra in the final few strides, breaking away from the field to come in at 10.95.
