WDL Classics Gateshead 2010: Jeter charges on
Live from the archive every single Sunday on the Wanda Diamond League YouTube channel, the WDL Classics series revisits historical Diamond League meetings with a re-live stream of the full two-hour TV broadcast. This week: Meeting records and Carmelita Jeter’s title charge in Gateshead.
Back in 2010, Carmelita Jeter was on top of the world. A year out from her world title in Daegu, the US sprinter was already considered among the greats thanks to her 100m personal best of 10.64, a time which still makes her the fourth-fastest woman in history today.
She was also well on the way to becoming the first ever Diamond League champion in the women’s 100m, in a dominant season which saw her claim four of a possible seven Diamond League wins in the 100m.
Victorious in Shanghai and Lausanne, Jeter headed to Gateshead for the British Grand Prix in July knowing that another win would put her within touching distance of the Diamond Trophy.
She made no mistakes at the first ever British Diamond League meeting, clocking a cool 10.95 to extend her lead at the top of the 100m standings.
Other outstanding performances in Gateshead included meeting records from Vincent Chepkok in the men’s 5000m (13:00.20) and fellow Kenyan Linus Chumba in the men’s 3000m steeplechase (8:19.72).
Polish star Piotr Malachowski also landed a meeting and national record with 69.83m in the men’s discus, a third successive victory en route to his first ever Diamond League title.
You can rewatch the 2010 Gateshead meeting in full from 15:00 GMT on the Wanda Diamond League YouTube channel this Sunday.
