WDL Classics Stockholm 2010: Bolt defeated!

Live from the archive every single Sunday on the Wanda Diamond League YouTube channel, the WDL Classics series revisits historical Diamond League meetings with a re-live stream of the full two-hour TV broadcast. This week: A rare defeat for Usain Bolt.

There are some things which have to be seen to be believed. And a one of them is a second-place finish for Usain Bolt.

In 2010, Diamond League fans in Stockholm witnessed one of the rarest sights in world sport, as the greatest sprinter in history suffered a shock defeat at the hands of American rival Tyson Gay.

Gay raced to a meeting record of 9.84 at the 1912 Olympic Stadium, leaving Bolt stunned in second place with a comparatively modest 9.97. It was the Jamaican’s first defeat in two years, and one of only four 100m losses in the entire course of his professional career.

The win would prove to be crucial for Gay’s successful title charge in the Diamond League, as he made up ground on both Bolt and Asafa Powell in the 100m standings.

Bolt, meanwhile, remained philosophical. “I told you I’m not unbeatable,” he told reporters.

Stockholm also saw meeting records from Gay’s fellow Americans Bershawn Jackson in the men’s 400m hurdles and Christian Cantwell in the men’s shot put.
