Live from the archive every single Sunday on the Wanda Diamond League YouTube channel, the WDL Classics series revisits historical Diamond League meetings with a re-live stream of the full two-hour TV broadcast. This week: the first ever Diamond League Final.
Over the last 15 years, some of the sport’s biggest names have gotten their hands on the Diamond Trophy.
From Usain Bolt and Noah Lyles to Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Caterine Ibargüen, the list of Diamond League champions is a veritable who’s who of the great and the good of 21st century track and field.
The very first Diamond League champions were crowned back at Weltklasse Zurich back on August 19, 2010.
As per the original Diamond League format, Zurich was the first leg of a two-meeting format, with 16 of the 32 champions crowned in each city.
Among those who clinched their first Diamond League titles with victory on that day included US sprint legend Allyson Felix, Jamaican hurdles star Kaliese Spencer and New Zealand shot put icon Valerie Vili (now Adams).
Yet victory in the final was not enough to win the title back in 2010. Under the original Diamond League format, the series champion was the athlete with the most points across the entire season, with a win in the final counting for double.
Stars such as Piotr Malachowski and Carmelita Jeter may not have won on the day in Zurich, but they still earned their place on the champions’ podium at the very first Diamond League Final.
