Ukrainian high jump star Yaroslava Mahuchikh will return to the city where she broke the world record and claimed Olympic gold last year when she lines up at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Paris on June 20.
Mahuchikh cleared 2.10m at the Meeting de Paris last season, breaking a 37-year-old world record and indelibly writing her name into the track and field history books.
She went on to win Olympic gold in the same city a few weeks later, before crowning a perfect summer with her third successive Wanda Diamond League title in Brussels.
“Before the world record attempt, I was in this state where I thought: I cannot do this. But then I asked the crowd to clap, and the atmosphere in the stadium was fantastic,” said Mahuchikh of her world record in Paris in an interview with diamondleague.com earlier this year.
“The main thing in my mind before my first step was that it would be a really big celebration in Ukraine if I did it. There was a lot of tough news, and I was thinking: If I can break the world record, I will sign the name of Ukraine into the history of athletics. A lot of people had said that no woman could ever jump higher than 2.09m, but now I have opened that door.”
Yet Mahuchikh is not done yet. In 2025, she is setting her sights on a fourth successive Diamond Trophy and a second world title, as well as dreaming of another world record.
“Even now I have the Olympic gold medal and the world record, I still want to jump higher. I want to jump 2.11m and 2.12m,” she said.
The Ukrainian star is currently top of the Diamond League standings, having opened her season with victories in Xiamen and Keqiao.
