El Bakkali, Moon and Wanyonyi head to Rabat

Olympic champions Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Soufiane El Bakkali and Katie Moon will all be in action at the third Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season in Rabat.

Two of Africa’s biggest athletics stars will be front and centre when the Wanda Diamond League heads to Morocco for the Meeting International Mohammed VI in Rabat on May 31.

Olympic champions Emmanuel Wanyonyi (800m) and Soufiane El Bakkali (3000m steeplechase) will both be in action on the track at the African leg of athletics’ premier one-day series, while world champion Katie Moon is set to headline the women’s pole vault.

El Bakkali is one of Morocco’s greatest ever sporting figures, with two Olympic gold medals, two world titles and a Diamond Trophy to his name.

He has made a habit of winning at his home Diamond League meeting, notching up four consecutive victories at the Meeting International Mohammed VI since 2022.

Wanyonyi, meanwhile, will be out to avenge his shock defeat in Rabat last year, when he finished third behind Tshepiso Masalela and Max Burgin.

The reigning Olympic and world champion is targeting his fourth career win at the Moroccan meeting this year, as he also sets his sights on a fourth successive Diamond League title.

Moon is also the reigning Diamond League champion in the women’s pole vault, having won the title for the second time in three seasons in Zurich last year.

The US star was Olympic champion in 2021 and world champion in 2022, 2023 and 2025.

Rabat is the third leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League, which begins in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 16 and ends at the two-day series final in Brussels on September 4-5.

The series unites the biggest names in track and field in some of the world’s most iconic arenas, crossing four continents and 15 cities over the course of the season.
