Gianmarco Tamberi grabbed his first Diamond League win in two years while Alyssa Jones, Agate de Sousa and Chase Jackson all broke meeting records at the Wanda Diamond League Silesia city event in Katowice’s market square on Saturday.
Fresh from his brilliant victory at the European Championships in Birmingham last week, Tamberi cleared 2.31m to win a rollercoaster high jump competition.
The Italian took three attempts to clear 2.29m after Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford had thrown down the gauntlet at the same height.
He then cleared 2.31m on the third attempt to clinch victory, his first since the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels in 2024.
Jones snatched a dramatic late victory in the long jump after Portugal’s Agate de Sousa had broken the meeting record early in the competition.
De Sousa jumped 6.98m in the second round and looked set for victory as she, Jones and Monae’ Nichols headed into the Final 3.
Yet with the last jump of the competition, Jones also marked 6.98m, equalling the record and stealing victory thanks to a superior second-best jump of 6.85m.
The win wasn’t quite enough to guarantee Jones qualification for the Diamond League Final, though she will now be first reserve to qualify having finished seventh in the overall standings.
De Sousa’s second place saw her qualify alongside Nichols, Larissa Iapichino, Malaika Mihambo, Claire Bryant and Hilary Kpatcha.
Jackson also broke a meeting record in the non-Diamond League women’s shot put, throwing 20.92m in the second round to beat Jessica Schilder and Sarah Mitton into first place.
