Gressier and Almgren resume rivalry in Stockholm 1500m

Two reigning Wanda Diamond League champions will face each other in a star-studded men's 1500m at the BAUHAUS-Galan in Stockholm on June 7.

Diamond League 5000m champion Jimmy Gressier will resume his rivalry with Swedish star Andreas Almgren in a star-studded men’s 1500m at the fifth meeting of the season in Stockholm.

Gressier won two stunning battles with Almgren last season, first in the 3000m at the Wanda Diamond League Final and then over 10,000m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The two men return to Diamond League action in Stockholm on June 7, where they will be among the favourites in a world-class 1500m field that includes at least three of the world top ten.

Gressier is the 10,000m world champion and will be taking on the 1500m at a Diamond League meeting for the first time since 2022.

Almgren will be hoping for another home-soil highlight after he set a European record in the 5000m in Stockholm last season.

The 1500m entry list also includes Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse, world numbers two and three Phanuel Koech and Azeddine Habz, Norway’s Narve Gilje Nordås and Sweden’s Samuel Pihlström.

Nuguse is the current world number six and has the most Diamond League wins to his name, with four victories in the past three seasons.

Kenyan 20-year-old Koech claimed his first ever Diamond League win with a stunning win over home favourite Josh Kerr in London last season and is the world U20 record holder with 3:27.72.

Habz enjoyed his most successful Diamond League season in 2025, taking back-to-back 1500m victories in Rome and Paris.

Stockholm is the fifth leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League, which begins in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 16 and ends at the two-day series final in Brussels on September 4-5.

The series unites the biggest names in track and field in some of the world’s most iconic arenas, crossing four continents and 15 cities over the course of the season.

A previous version of this article stated that Niels Laros was confirmed for the 1500m in Stockholm. This error has now been corrected.
