OMEGA Moment of the Meeting: Werro’s world record attempt

Audrey Werro rattled the world record in the women's 800m as the Road to the Final reached the halfway stage at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Paris.

It was going to take something special for Audrey Werro to improve on her brilliant performance in Stockholm earlier this month.

In Paris on Sunday, she delivered something special.

Reigning Diamond League champion Werro had thrown down the gauntlet in Sweden, becoming the third-fastest woman in history over 800m with a brilliant 1:53.94.

With that performance under her belt, the Swiss star headed to Paris brimming with confidence and with one eye on the world record this weekend.

Though she didn’t quite reach those dizzying heights, her performance at the Stade Charléty was still one for the ages.

As she stormed over the line in Paris, the Wanda Diamond League’s Official Timekeeper OMEGA clocked her in at 1:53.80, a new world lead, meeting record and Diamond League record.

It was just over half a second short of the world record which now appears to be firmly within Werro’s reach.

“I wasn’t expecting to be running so fast this season,” she said after the race. On current form, however, it may only be a matter of time before her next world record attempt.
