World record breakers Chebet and Tsegay return to Eugene

Kenyan star Beatrice Chebet will line-up in the 5000m at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Eugene next month, a year after her 10,000m world record at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic.

Beatrice Chebet and Gudaf Tsegay are set to return to the Prefontaine Classic for a star-studded 5000m in July, having both broken world records at the Eugene Wanda Diamond League meeting in recent years.

Ethiopia’s Tsegay set the current 5000m world record of 14:00.21 at the Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene in 2023.

Kenyan star Chebet clocked 28:54.14 in a non-Diamond League ten-kilometre race in Eugene last season, joining the growing list of athletes who have broken a world record at a Diamond League meeting in recent years.

She went on to claim gold in both the 10,000m and 5000m at the Olympic Games in Paris before regaining her 5000m Wanda Diamond League title in Brussels in September.

Chebet kickstarted her title defence with victory in Xiamen last month, and is also confirmed to race in Rabat next weekend.

She and Tsegay will face another test in Eugene, as the top-four ranked 5000m runners in the world come together at Hayward Field.

Chebet will face Ethiopian rivals Medina Eisa, Ejgayehu Taye and Tsigie Gebreselama in what will be another crucial milestone on the Road to the Final in 2025.
