It’s fair to say that Valarie Allman is not used to losing in the Wanda Diamond League.
Over the past five years, the US star has dominated the women’s discus, with four successive series titles and a total of 17 individual victories.
Heading into the Meeting de Paris this Friday, Allman had not lost in 10 meetings, with her last defeat coming in Oslo back in 2023.
Yet as the competition reached its climax in the French capital, the American found herself in an unusually tricky spot.
Her opening effort of 64.88m was enough to sneak her into the Final 3, but it was Jorinde Van Klinken who led the competition as the three best throwers lined up for their final attempts.
Allman needed to pull out something special to extend her winning streak, and she did just that.
After Van Klinken and Yaime Perez both failed to improve their mark in the Final 3, Allman stepped up and launched a huge throw to snatch a dramatic late victory.
The Wanda Diamond League’s Official Timekeeper OMEGA measured the throw at 67.56m, more than a metre ahead of Van Klinken’s best.
Allman knew it was good as soon as it left her hand, letting out a triumphant scream which echoed around the packed out Stade Charléty.
